Dragonchain is not a single cryptocurrency, but a currency as well as an architecture for other currencies inside a private blockchain. Dragonchain was originally authored by Disney Company, but has since become a public venture.[1] The public/private hybrid Dragonchain blockchain is a platform and architecture, bridging public and private cryptocurrencies.[2] A Dragonchain cryptocurrency coin is called a Dragon.

Overview

The Dragonchain public/private hybrid blockchain platform developed originally by a group inside of the Disney Company in Seattle. In 2016, Disney open-sourced the project as the Dragonchain Foundation, a non-profit that manages the upkeep of the Dragonchain.[3][4] Dragonchain is a variation of a type of a blockchain, but is better thought of as a recursive blockchain - a blockchain composed of other blockchains.[1]

The Dragonchain cryptocurrency is called Dragons. Initially, a total of 433,494,437 Dragons are created and distributed between 2 October and 2 November 2017.[5]

Dragonchain paused it's pre-sale on the last day, and refunded some investors from their ICO.[6]

Dragon Platform

The Dragon blockchain consists of five different types of nodes:[1][7][8]

  • Level 1 : Business node, determines if transactions are approved or denied
  • Level 2 : Enterprise verification node, determines validity of level 1 nodes
  • Level 3 : Ensures diversity of level 1 and 2 nodes
  • Level 4 : Independent witness, third party verification
  • Level 5 : Other forms of identification

History

Walt Disney released Dragonchain as open source in October, 2016.[9]

In April 2018, DragonChain was rebranded as a cryptocurrency, marketplace, platform, and technology incubator. The platform supports many different programming languages to create decentralized smart contracts with AWS support,[10] and acts as a Blockchain-as-a-service (Baas).[7]

Dragonchain's platform was released August 1, 2018.[7] With this release, Dragonchain went from a private blockchain to an open source public venture, completely separate from Disney.[2]

On September 10, 2018, Dragonchain released several new products: Takara for monthly price-stabilized cryptocurrency purchases, DragonNet blockchain verification, DragonDen cryptocurrency social-media platform, Marketplace gig economy and freelancer platform. Dragon announced DragonScale arbitrator and blockchain technology incubator, and Dragon Days of Slumber Score which will grant token holders privileges based on token balance and their length of holding.[11]
