Donghua University (simplified Chinese: 东华大学; traditional Chinese: 東華大學; pinyin: Dōnghuá Dàxué) ( Donghua means eastern China area in Chinese ) is a public research university in Shanghai, China.[1] Established in 1951, DHU is one of the state-key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China and is a member of China's Project 211 group of national universities. It is a Chinese Ministry of Education Double First Class Discipline University, with Double First Class status in certain disciplines, [2] and is especially well known for its engineering, business and management, design and materials disciplines.[3]

History

Founded in June 1951, Donghua University was originally named East China Institute of Textile Technology (华东纺织工学院).[4] In September 1985, the university changed its name to China Textile University (中国纺织大学) and changed it once again to Donghua University in August 1999. It has been a national key university since 1960 and was one of the first educational institutions in China authorized to confer all three levels of degree: bachelor's, master's, and doctorate.

Cooperation

Donghua University has established cooperative relationships with more than 60 higher education institutions and well-known enterprises around the world. International students from 83 countries have graduated from the university. The university is steadily developing joint programs such as Donghua-Carleton IMBA, Sino-German education for bachelor's degree of Light Chemical Engineering, and Sino-Japan education for bachelor's degree in Fashion Design & Engineering.

Donghua has successfully hosted international conferences such as the International Fashion Forum of the Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival and the 83rd World Conference of Textile Institutes.

International Students

As early as 1954, DHU commenced to accept international students who were among the first group of overseas students enrolled by Chinese universities. In 2016, DHU has brought up 4774 international students from over 138 countries. Almost all of the undergraduate, postgraduate and research programs are open to international students. Also, many non-degree programs including Chinese language programs, Degree-Preparation program, advanced study programs, and a variety of short-term programs are available to international students.

Campuses

Donghua University has two campuses: one in Changning District and the other in Songjiang District in Shanghai. Most bachelor courses are taken in Songjiang district.[5]
