Budhlada (Punjabi: ਬੁਢਲਾਡਾ) is a city and a municipal council in Mansa district in the state of Punjab, India. It is located in the Cotton Belt of India and is one of the largest cotton markets in Asia. Most of the population there depends on the agricultural yield in the area. The Budhlada city is divided into 13 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. It has Class II Municipal Council functioning since 1950s
Geography
Budhlada is located at 29°56′N 75°34′E / 29.93°N 75.57°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 211 metres (692 ft). border of Haryana State is 25 km from the city.
Demographics
The total population in Budhlada is 26,172[2] As per the 2011 Census, there are 13,832 males in the city (53%) and 12,340 females (47%). The sex ratio of the city is 892 (females per 1,000 males). Further the children below 6 years of age are 2,882 of which 1,599 are boys and 1,283 are girls. 11% of total population is under 6 years of age. Out of 26,172 people, 18,680 people are literate. Budhlada has a literacy rate of 80.2%, higher than the national literacy rate of 74.04%; with male literacy of 84.8% and female literacy of 75.1%. Sikhism and Hinduism are the major religions studied in Budhlada, making up about 98% of the population. Number of working individuals in Budhlada are 8,726. 17,446 are un-employed.

Budhlada has a semi-arid climate with temperatures ranging from 46 °C (115 °F) in summers to 3 °C (37 °F) in winters.

Transport
Road
The city is located on SH-21 and SH-10. The border of Haryana State is 25 km from the city. It is connected by road with Mansa (33 km), Bathinda (88 km), Chandigarh (174 km), Fatehabad (65 km) and Patiala (109 km).
Railways
The railway station of the city was established in 1895. It is situated on Delhi-Fazilka line rail line to connect with major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Guwahati and Kolkata.
Air
The nearest airports to the city are Bathinda Airport (86 km) and Patiala Airport (89 km).
History
BUDHA and LADA were two real brothers who were khatri by caste. The village got its name from the names of these two brothers. It was a part of Kaithal state name. The king of the Kaithal state did not help the British during the insurgency of 1857. So the British annexed the kingdom. Later on, it was merged with Karnal District. It was the largest market of East Punjab. It was a very big recruitment centre of military personnel which was second to only to Rohtak in India. The Ashoka Chakra Award was conferred on Hawaldar Joginder Singh Datewas who was recruited from Budhlada.
In the 1930s-40s, Budhlada was popular for its boora khand (superfine sugar). A big factory was located near the railway station; consignments were sent to Lahore and Karachi. Then the bitter pill of Partition ended it all.[3]
As per 1991 census, the total population of the city was 18,123. The sub division came into being on 13-4-1992.
Budhlada was a "riyasat" (princely state). British police station before freedom. Famous "LOK NIKE" (Lok Nike means HERO OF PEOPLE) Jiauna Maur's brother Kishna Maur was arrested by Budhlada Police station. Both brothers helped the poor people. Another Hero Sucha Singh Soorma's village Samauo is almost 18 km away from Budhlada.
But it remained neglected after the freedom of India, due to political reasons. Budhlada has been home to the great martyr Capt K. K. Gaur and the great social reformer Babu Hitabhilashi. Though Budhlada is a backward area but its much popular in whole Punjab. And Budhlada has some specialty cause of its culture. Few things below given which make Budhlada a best city. Budhlada is a home to great scientist Dr. M. L. Singla known as Moon Man of India,who contributed his efforts in the success of Chandrayan as project head.
Importance in Praja movement
Freedom fighters were utilised Budhlada for so many Praja movements in the present Bathinda district. The local people started Praja Movement from the death of Sewa Singh Thikriwala (president of Riyasat Praja Mandal party).
Places of interest
Budhlada city is 70 km away from Bathinda and is situated on Delhi-Fazilka line rail line. A popular Gurudwara Brahm Bunga is situated in Dodra 10 km from Budhlada. Every year, three main samagams are held at DODRA in the months of March, September and December. Sangat from all over the world comes over during these samagams to take laha. The city is connected by rail and road ways to other cities of Punjab, Haryana and more. The famous places of city are Krishna Mandir, Shiva Mandir, Hanuman Mandir, Gurudwara Guru Teg Bahadur, Guru Nanak College, YLS Academy of Education, Jagat Resorts, Pool Center, New court complex, ITI stadium, Bharati Palace, Ram Bagh (Park), Sips & Bytes (Restaurant) ,Gupta Hospital & Manu Vatika School, Gulab Ji Food Products (DAISY A Manufacturing Company) Jassi dod Gym .Sihan patti, New Judicial Court Complex.

Budhlada has a number of schools, institutes and colleges. There are some private institutes in the city preparing students for various engineering and medical entrance examinations.
