The Bairabi–Sairang line is a railway line from Bairabi railway station to Sairang. It is a part of Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways.
Technical Features
The 84.25 km broad gauge railway line from Katakhal Junction to Bairabi railway stations, was completed on 21 March 2016,[1] at a cost of 326.51 cr INR. An estimated 28 hectares (69 acres) of land is required for the construction of 51 kilometres (32 mi) long Bairabi-Sairang rail line. The Bairabi-Sairang rail link will require construction of 130 bridges, 23 tunnels and four stations namely Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang and Sairang.[2][3] The cost of Construction from Bairabi to Sairang is estimated at 2384 Crores.[4]
Further Extension
In August 2015, Indian Railway completed a survey for a possible new route extension from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah on Mizoram’s southern tip on the border of Myanmar where at nearby Zochachhuah 'Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) road enters Myanmar.[5][6]
Current Status
Indian Railway has already converted the current 84 km railline from Katakhal (Assam) to Bairabi 2 km inside Mizoram. Passenger services started on this line on 27 May 2016 by formal inauguration of Silchar - Bhairabi Passenger Train service (55667/55668).[7] Its further 51.38 km Bairabi Sairang line extension from Bairabi to Sairang (20 km north of Aizawl) in Mizoram is under construction, with target completion date of March 2019 as per status update in March 2016.[5][6] Due to Rainy season and Compensation issues, date of completion has been revised to March 2020. Nov 2017: Of 11.46 km tunnel to be dug for this 51.38 km Bairabi to Sairang rail line, 8.6 km tunneling work is completed.[8]. 22 of the 23 Bridges have been Completed as of November 2017.[9]
