Ayiroor (also spelled Ayroor) is a village located in the western part of Ranni taluk, in the Pathanamthitta district in Kerala state, India. It is bordered by hills and located near the Western Ghats. Ayiroor was previously part of Tiruvalla taluk in Alleppey district and is considered part of the Edanadu region in Kerala.[1] The Pamba River flows on the southern side of the village, making the soil around the village very fertile.

Tourism

The Pamba River and the surrounding hills make Ayiroor a picturesque location in central Travancore. Residents of Ayiroor cultivate coconut, rubber, cocoa, tapioca, plantains, cinnamon, pepper, nutmeg, vanilla, rambutan and other crops, making the per capita income of the residents higher than the state average. The nearest airports are the Cochin International Airport, located 127 kilometers away, and Trivandrum International Airport, 120 kilometers away.

One of the highlights of Ayiroor is the Cherukolpuzha Hindu Parishad, a religious festival that is held for a week in February. Every year since 1912 the festival is held on the dry bed of the Pamba river.[2] Snake boat races also attract people to the village.[3]

Religion

Christianity and Hinduism are the dominant religions in the region, each having roughly the same number of followers. Both religions have historically co-existed peacefully, producing a beautiful array of churches and temples throughout the region. Within its history, Ayroor has avoided major religious conflict. There are no Muslims and Mosques in Ayroor, however, this community is small and isolated to an area(Kattoor) opposite to Pamba River.

Ayroor village used to be a part of the Erstwhile Travancore kingdom. It is believed that the Kovilans who were skilled warriors ruled Ayroor in the past, the village became the part of the Trancore Kingdom in the 1790's. The Kovilans almost ruled the village till 1950. The Kovilans brought a Christian family from the north in 4th century AD as they believed that the kingdom will become prosperous with presence of Christians. The descendants of this family are still present in Ayroor and is known as the Ayyakkavil family.

The heir of the Kovilans, Raja Harikrishnan Kovilan or Harikrishnan Puthuparambil chose the path of Christianity in the 5th century AD. Therefore, some of the tenants of the village too converted to Christianity. The last known King of the village was Thoma Joshuaa Kochupurakalputhuparambil or Raja Thoma VII who bought a large property in Erumeli and lived there, while the British managed the village in the absence of the king.Thoma VII's son Ausep Thoma Kochupurakalputhuparambil or Joseph Thomas Kochupurakalputhuparambil was the next heir to succeed his father according to the British records in which the King himself stated that Ausep would be the next king, but Raja Thoma Kochupurakalputhuparambil lost his properties in Ayroor in 1950 as the properties were then in the hands of the Government of India leaving his heirs with no properties in Aryoor. The Kovilans played an important role in making the village filled with almost the same numbers of Chritians as of the Hindus in the village.
