Assembly Elections are due to be held in Andhra Pradesh in April or May 2019 to constitute the fifteenth Legislative Assembly. These elections are to be held concurrently with the Indian general election, 2019. The incumbent Telugu Desam Party headed by chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the YSR Congress Party headed by opposition leader Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy and Jana Sena Party headed by actor-turned-politician Pawan Kalyan are considered to be the main contestants in the election.[2]

Previous Assembly

In the 2014 Andhra Pradesh Assembly election, the Telugu Desam Party led by former chief minister and opposition leader N. Chandrababu Naidu emerged as the single largest party with 117 seats while 88 were required for majority. Naidu was invited to form the government as part of the fourteenth Andhra Pradesh assembly by Governor of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana E. S. L. Narasimhan. It was the first assembly in Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation of the state into Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Background

The TDP's withdrawal from the National Democratic Alliance in March 2018[3] following the disputes between the TDP and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding the Special Category Status (SCS), a part of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014 has resulted in competition between the two parties. A few weeks later, the BJP announced that they will contest in all 175 assembly constituencies in the state.[4] Head of YSR Congress Party and leader of the opposition in the fourteenth assembly, Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy has been campaigning in the state since November 2017. As part of the campaign, Reddy had walked over 2,000 kilometres (1,200 mi) on foot, across the state and had plans to cover an additional 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) as of May 2018.[5] Meanwhile, Pawan Kalyan's JSP had been gaining significant support in Uttarandhra (North Coastal Andhra Pradesh).[6]
