Konidela Kalyan Babu,[4] better known by his stage name Pawan Kalyan, is an Indian film actor, producer, director, screenwriter, writer, and politician. His film works are predominantly in Telugu cinema. He is the younger brother of popular actor turned politician Chiranjeevi. Kalyan made his acting debut in the 1996 Telugu film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi. In 1998, he starred in Tholi Prema, which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for that year.

He is known for his works in the films Gokulamlo Seetha, Suswagatam, Tammudu, Badri, Kushi, Jalsa and Gabbar Singh, for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Actor – Telugu,[5] and Attarintiki Daredi, which became one of the highest grossing Telugu film of all time.[6] He was listed 26th and 69th respectively in the Forbes India list of top 100 Celebrities of 2013 and 2017.[7][8] As of 2014, he holds a net worth of ₹185 million (US$2.6 million).[9] He produces films under the banners Anjana Productions and Pawan Kalyan Creative Works.[10]

In March 2014 he ventured into politics, founding the Jana Sena Party.[11][12][13] During that period, Pawan Kalyan was listed by Google as the most searched Indian celebrity politician on Google Search.[14] He was also the first South Indian to endorse the popular soft-drink giant Pepsi.

Personal life

Kalyan was born to Konidela Venkat Rao and Anjana Devi in Bapatla, Andhra Pradesh.[15] He is the younger brother of Chiranjeevi and Nagendra Babu. He started using the name "Pawan" after a martial arts presentation he organized to demonstrate his training.[16] He holds a black belt in karate.[17]

Pawan Kalyan has been married three times; to Nandini from 1997 to 2007, to Renu Desai from 2009 to 2012 and to Anna Lezhneva since 2013.[18] He has a son Akira, and a daughter Aadhya, with Renu Desai.[18] and a son Mark Shankar Pawanovich with Anna Lezhneva.[19]

Pawan Kalyan is also the uncle of actors Ram Charan,[20] Varun Tej,[21] and Sai Dharam Tej.[22]

Career

Pawan Kalyan entered the Telugu movie industry with the 1996 film Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi as Kalyan Kumar. His second movie was Gokulamlo Seetha in 1997, which was a remake of the 1996 Tamil film Gokulathil Seethai. This movie was directed by Muthyala Subbaiah and produced by G.V.G. Raju. In 1997, he also appeared in Suswagatham, a remake of the 1997 Tamil film Love Today.

In 1998, Tholi Prema was released and won a National Award and six Nandi Awards.[23] After Tholi Prema, Pawan Kalyan acted in Thammudu, playing the role of a kick boxer. Thammudu was released on 15 July 1999 and was written and directed by P. A. Arun Prasad. Next, he acted in Puri Jagannadh's first directorial venture Badri. In 2001, he was the brand ambassador for Pepsi at the time his brother Chiranjeevi was promoting Coca-Cola.[24]

In 2001, Pawan Kalyan acted in the film Kushi. The film was released on 27 April 2001 and was directed by S. J. Surya, which became a huge hit in that year and eventually turned up as an Industry hit. His next film Johnny, written and directed by Kalyan, released on 26 April 2003. Kalyan also starred in the film, along with Renu Desai. In 2004, his film Gudumba Shankar was released. The film was directed by Veera Shankar and produced by Pawan's brother Nagendra Babu under Anjana Productions banner. The film's script and screenplay were written by Kalyan and he also choreographed three songs in this film and actions scenes were conceived and choreographed by him.[25] In 2005, the film Balu ABCDEFG, directed by A. Karunakaran was released. This was A. Karunakaran's second film with Pawan Kalyan after Tholi Prema. This film was produced by C. Ashwini Dutt under Vyjayanthi Movies banner. In 2006, Bangaram, directed by Tamil director Dharani was released. Later that year, he appeared in Annavaram, directed by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao. Asin, and Sandhya were cast alongside Pawan in the film and the film was produced under Supergood Films. The film was released on 29 December 2006[26] and collected ₹230 million in 3 weeks and ₹300 million (US$4.2 million) in 70 Days.[27][28] The film was a remake of the Tamil film Thirupaachi. Pawan Kalyan also choreographed the song "Neevalle Neevalle" in this film. During March 2006, Pawan Kalyan launched his second directorial venture Satyagrahi, produced by A. M. Rathnam, which would be a tale questioning the atrocities in society. After spending a few months on pre-production by signing with P. C. Sriram and A. R. Rahman, the film was later suddenly shelved.[29]

In 2008, Jalsa, directed by Trivikram Srinivas and produced by Allu Aravind was released on 2 April. This film got the highest First-day collection in Telugu film history and was also the first for any regional film in south India in a single state by that time.[30] Jalsa movie turned out to be the Highest Grosser of 2008 in Telugu Cinema.[31]

Puli was written and directed by S. J. Surya and released in 2010. An official announcement was made in the same year that Pawan Kalyan was going to play a small role in a movie about Jesus Christ directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao .[32]

In 2011, he appeared in Teen Maar, a remake of Love Aaj Kal, directed by Jayanth C. Paranjee.[33] In 2011, he also appeared in Vishnuvardhan's gangster film Panjaa.[34][35]

In 2012, Pawan Kalyan appeared in Gabbar Singh, a remake of Dabangg, directed by Harish Shankar.[36] The film successfully completed 100 days and stood as the second highest-grossing film of all time in Tollywood.[37][38] After this film, he worked in Puri Jagannadh's Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu.

In 2013, he appeared in Trivikram Srinivas's Attharintiki Daaredhi. The film, released on 27 September 2013, faced problems with piracy as half of the movie got leaked to the internet prior to its release.[39] In spite of this Attharintiki Daaredhi was a blockbuster in 2013. The movie completed 100 days in 33 theaters and held the record of the highest grossing film of all time in Tollywood, surpassing the previous record of Magadheera.[40] Later, it was surpassed by Baahubali: The Beginning. Kalyan's next movie was a remake of the Hindi Movie Oh My God. The movie shooting was expected to start on 19 May but was delayed for various reasons, like finding a heroine. The movie was named Gopala Gopala, with shooting started on 9 June.[41] It was released on 10 January 2015 and got a positive response. In 2014, a STAR India survey ranked Pawan Kalyan as one of the Top 5 Heroes of India.[42]

In 2017, he has starred in a film called katamarayudu which was a remake of Tamil film veeram starring Ajith. Initially, it was announced that S.J.Surya as a director. However, in a sudden turn of events, Suryah left the project to concentrate on acting assignments and he was replaced by Kishore Kumar Pardasany collaborating with Pawan for the second time after Gopala Gopala (2015).

In 2018, he appeared in a film called Agnyathavaasi (lit. prince in exile) which was directed by Trivikram Srinivas. It was the 25th film of pspk. Music for the film was given by Anirudh Ravichander which was his debut Telugu film

Humanitarian works

In 2012, he donated Rs.500,000 to support Olympic sports shooter Rekha Chalichemala.[43]

In 2013, he reportedly donated Rs.2 million to the Natural Calamity Management Fund for those impacted by the floods at Uttarakhand.[44]

On 14 October 2014, he announced a donation of Rs.5 million to the Chief Minister's relief fund for taking up relief operations in the aftermath of cyclone Hudhud in Andhra Pradesh.[45]

Pawan Kalyan gave 1 lakh rupees to the character artist Pavala Shyamala who suffered from a fatal illness.[46]

On 27 July 2013, he donated 1 lakh rupees to Jesus old age home at Pandurangapuram in Khammam district in Telangana.[47]

Pawan Kalyan helped a biker, Gota Satish Kumar with 5 lakh rupees who lost his legs in an accident.[48]

Pawan Kalyan donated Rs.5lakhs to differently-abled T20 Cricket tournament and 1 lakh for each team.[49]

On April 10, 2018 he announced in his twitter that he will give a 10 lakh cheque to Sri Venkata Rahul Ragala for achieving Gold Medal in Common Wealth Games & making our Mother land "Bharath" Proud.[50][51]

Political career

Pawan Kalyan founded a political party called Jana Sena on 14 March 2014.[52] He wrote a Book Named Ism which is also the Ideology of the Jana sena Party.[53] He met with then BJP Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to discuss the issues related to both the Telugu states and extended his support.[54] Pawan Kalyan campaigned extensively for the Telugu Desam Party and BJP to combine in Andhra and Telangana. His rallies drew what the Deccan-Journal called "huge crowds" in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.[55] In December 2017, Pawan Kalyan announced that he intended to enter full-time politics.

In November 2016, Pawan Kalyan announced that Jana Sena will contest in the 2019 general elections in Andhra Pradesh.[56]

Brand endorsements

In January 2017, Pawan Kalyan agreed to take up the role of the brand ambassador for Hand Loom weavers in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.[58]

In August 2017, Pawan Kalyan was asked to be the brand ambassador to JEEVAN DAAN, an initiative started for organ donation by government of Andhra Pradesh[59]
