Nhooph Al-Areebi (born November 23, 1994) is a Canadian professional wrestler. She is signed to WWE, performing on the NXT brand under the ring name Aliyah.

Early life

Nhooph Al-Areebi was born in Toronto, Ontario.[9] She is of Arab descent and grew up in a strict, conservative family.[4][10] In 2012, she graduated from St. Joseph's College School, and later attended George Brown College, where she studied nursing.[10] She also attended a circus training school.[4]

Professional wrestling career

Independent circuit (2013–2015)

Al-Areebi wrestled on the independent circuit under the ring name Jasmin Areebi, debuting for Squared Circle Wrestling (SCW) in Toronto in January 2013. She wrestled for a variety of promotions in Canada and the United States, including Pure Wrestling Association (PWA), Absolute Intense Wrestling (AIW), and New England Championship Wrestling (NECW).[7]

WWE (2015–present)

On March 17, 2015, it was reported that Al-Areebi had signed a developmental contract with WWE.[7] Her signing was confirmed by WWE on April 13.[1] She made her first appearance at the NXT TakeOver: Unstoppable event on May 20, as part of Tyler Breeze's entrance.[11] She made her in-ring debut on June 20 during an NXT live event, where she competed in a six-person tag team match.[12] In October, she was given the ring name Aliyah.[5]

Aliyah's television debut took place on the January 13, 2016, episode of NXT, where she competed in a number one contender's battle royal for Bayley's NXT Women's Championship, which was won by Carmella.[13] Aliyah returned on the April 27 episode of NXT, where competed in her first televised singles match, losing to Carmella.[14] She made her third television appearance on the August 3 episode of NXT, losing to the NXT Women's Champion Asuka in a non-title match.[15] On the August 31 episode of NXT, she debuted new ring gear and entrance music, leaving her Arabian gimmick.[16][17] On the October 26 episode of NXT, she defeated Billie Kay due to a distraction by Liv Morgan, before she and Morgan were attacked by Kay and Peyton Royce.[18] On the November 16 episode of NXT, Aliyah and Ember Moon saved Morgan after another attack by Kay and Royce.[19] This resulted in a six-woman tag team match that took place the following week, in which Aliyah's team won.[20]

On January 3, 2017, Aliyah appeared on SmackDown Live, where she competed in a losing effort to Carmella.[21] Few months later, on the October 4 episode of NXT, Aliyah was defeated by Mae Young Classic winner Kairi Sane, while also showing signs of a heel turn.[22] Throughout 2018, Aliyah continued losing to different competitors such as Lacey Evans[23] and Ember Moon.[24] Aliyah turned heel on the August 15, 2018 edition of NXT, when she was shown taking advice from NXT Women's Champion Shayna Baszler regarding Aliyah's match against Kairi Sane, only to be defeated by Sane via submission.[25]

For the latter half of 2018, Aliyah has been primarily used as enhancement talent to up and coming wrestlers, losing all but 1 of her televised matches and losing all of her singles televised matches.[26]

Personal life

Al-Areebi first decided she wanted to become a wrestler after watching Beth Phoenix and Mickie James compete at a taping of Raw on May 5, 2008. Her favorite wrestlers include Edge and Jeff Hardy.[4]

In September 2015, a number of racially insensitive comments made several years prior on Al-Areebi's Twitter account were discovered. WWE subsequently issued a statement regarding the controversy, stating that her account was used by another person at the time.[27]
