Al Utouriya (Arabic: العطورية; also translated as Al `Aţūrīyah) is a village in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al-Shahaniya.[1] It used to be part of the Al Jemailiya municipality before the municipality was incorporated into Al Rayyan.[2] In 2014, the village was incorporated into the newly-created Al-Shahaniya Municipality.[3]

Etymology

Al Utouriya's name is derived from the Arabic word atar, which translates to 'perfume' or 'aroma'. It was given this name due to the scent emanating from a nearby rawdat (depression) which hosts a number of aromatic herbs.[4]

Infrastructure

As a primarily rural community centered on agriculture, the village has 256 establishments according to the 2015 government census, of which 52 are farms and 158 are hobby farms (also called ezbas). No health care or educational facilities were recorded in the census.[5]

There is a large government-owned plant nursery in the village which covers 2,500 sq meters. Plants from the nursery are used in research and also distributed to government ministries. It was established in 2003.[6]

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the village comprised 363 housing units[7] and 123 establishments.[8] There were 1,060 people living in the village, of which 72% were male and 28% were female. Out of the 1,060 inhabitants, 80% were 20 years of age or older and 20% were under the age of 20.[5]

Employed persons made up 72% of the total population. Females accounted for 19% of the working population, while males accounted for 81% of the working population. Most of the working population is employed within the agricultural industry (356), and public administration and defense comes in second with 110 employed individuals.[5]
