Al Nasraniya (Arabic: النصرانية) is a village[1] in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al-Shahaniya.[2] It was demarcated in 1988.[1] It used to be part of the Al Jemailiya municipality before the municipality was incorporated into Al Rayyan.[3] In 2014, the settlement was incorporated into the newly-created Al-Shahaniya Municipality.[4]

Etymology

Nasraniya was named after a local well. Because the well was built on rocky, solid ground, locals had to dig deep under the surface for the well to function. Once the well was working, it was a described as a victory, and the locals decided to name the well 'Nasraniya' (Christianity), in reference to the victory of the Muslims against Christianity in the Arabian Peninsula.[5]

History

J.G. Lorimer mentioned Nasraniya in 1908 in his Gazetteer of the Persian Gulf, stating that it lies "11 miles south of the foot of Dohat Faishsākh and 16 miles west from the coast" and remarked on the presence of a masonry well, 25 fathoms (150 feet) deep, yielding good water.[6]

Infrastructure

Overall, in the 2015 population and housing census, Al Nasraniya was recorded as having 304 standing buildings. The vast majority of these (192) were constructed before 2000, while 29 were built from 2000 to 2010, and the remaining 83 were built post-2010. The area is highly rural; 3 of its buildings are classified as educational facilities, 57 are farm-related, and 112 are related to hobby farms. There are no health care facilities.[7]

Two government buildings are based in Al Nasraniya.[7] They belong to The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, which has an office in the village.[8]

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the settlement comprised 288 housing units[9] and 149 establishments.[10] There were 1,043 people living in the settlement, of which 80% were male and 20% were female. Out of the 1,043 inhabitants, 84% were 20 years of age or older and 16% were under the age of 20. The literacy rate was 89.2%.[7]

Employed persons made up 77% of the total population. Females accounted for 10% of the working population, while males accounted for 90% of the working population. Nearly half the working population (365) are employed in construction, while 204 are employed in agriculture and 61 are employed in public administration and defense.[7]
