Agharia

Not to be confused with Agaria, a caste of traditional iron-smelters.

Agharia is a Hindu caste from India.

The Agharias are found predominantly in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha and Chhota Nagpur. In Odisha they were traditionally land lords and farmers, but have increasingly branched out to other professions.[1]

History

The Agharias of Odisha claim Rajput descent. According to this theory, the name of the community is derived from Agra, from where their Rajput ancestors migrated to other places. The dialect Aghria that they speak is closely related to Hindi and has greatly been influenced by Sambalpuri, Odiya since they migrated from the northern part of India. They go by last name as Patel, Naik, Nayak, Choudhury, Pandey, Sai, Gountia etc.
