Aeonium gorgoneum is a species of flowering plant in the family Crassulaceae. The species is endemic in Cape Verde. The plant was first scientifically described by Johann Anton Schmidt in 1852.[3]

Its local name is called salão.[4] The plant plays a role in traditional medicine for the treatment of bronchitis.[4]

Description

The plant is a perennial shrub and grows up to about 2 m tall.

Its chromosome number is 2n = 36.[5]

Distribution and ecology

Aeonium gorgoneum is found on the islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente and São Nicolau[6] at elevations from 300 to 1,300 m above sea level. Before the end of the Ice Age, they were likely to be founded at lower locations than today.

Aeonium gorgoneum is featured on a Cape Verdean $100 escudo coin in 1994.

Aeonium gorgoneum was also featured on a Cape Verdean stamp issued in 2002.[7]

One of the plants is at the University of California Botanical Garden.

Possible synonym

The plant name Sempervivum gorgoneum J.A. Schmidt ex. Cout, published in 1914,[8] may be a synonym.[9]
