National roads in Poland

The autostrada A3 was a planned motorway from 1993[1][2] to 2001[3] that was supposed to be built in western Poland. It was planned to begin in Szczecin, link Zielona Góra, Bolków and end in Lubawka on Polish-Czech border. In 2001 the project was changed and the route will be constructed as an expressway S3.[4]

Route details

Some road maps published in 1990s had an approximate route of the motorway, which in some places was different than planned nowadays route S3.

Autostrada was planned to begin on “Radziszewo” interchange with national road 118 (present road 31), run towards Pyrzyce where it could run parallel to national road 3 between Pyrzyce and Gorzów Wielkopolski. From Gorzów, A3 was planned to run straightly to Jordanowo where was planned an interchange with motorway A2 and road 3, bypass Świebodzin, bypass Sulechów, cross Oder river using a new bridge and use the existing bypass of Zielona Góra.

From Zielona Góra the motorway was planned to be built west of Nowa Sól, have a junction with road 3 near crossing with voivodeship road 292 and another one near Gaworzyce. If built, A3 would be eastern bypass of Legnica, connect with A4 motorway on “Gniewomierz” junction and run parallel to road 3 to Bolków. On the last stretch, motorway would run parallel to national road 371 (present road 5), bypassing Kamienna Góra and end its route on Czech Republic–Poland border, connecting with Czech national road 16.[5][6]
