The competition included a one-week break, from 25 June to 1 July, for an international break and started later than normal due to the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.[2]

The teams for this season were: Canterbury Rams, Hawke's Bay Hawks, Manawatu Jets, Nelson Giants, Southland Sharks, Super City Rangers, Taranaki Mountainairs and Wellington Saints.
