Family Lamiaceae

The Lamiaceae (mint family) is the sixth largest family of the flowering-plants.[F 1]

Subfamily Viticoideae

Although no members of the Viticoideae (sage subfamily) have yet been verified outside of cultivation in New York, the beach vitex has been documented as having the potential to be highly invasive in the Long Island region. The genus Callicarpa is included here only for convenience, as it is currently unplaced within the Lamiaceae but is said to be "allied" to the Viticoideae.[1] Callicarpa americana has also not been found to have naturalized in New York, but it is cultivaed and sold in the "native plant" trade.
