Etymology

First attested in the Worin seokbo (月印釋譜 / 월인석보), 1459, as Middle Korean 뫼ᅀᅡ리 (mwōyzari).

Compound of (mwōy) (me, “mountain”), 살— (sāl-, “to live”) and (i, suffix deriving a noun).[1]
