Etymology

Adverb (ani, rhetorical interrogative) + 図ら (hakara, the irrealis of verb 図る (hakaru, to think)) + suppositional auxiliary (-n) (from -m, from -mu) + interrogative particle (ya). Literally "(just) how could one think (such a thing so)?".
