Etymology

Nominalization of the 連 (れん)用 (よう)形 (けい) (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of the verb 読 (よ)み切 (き)る (yomikiru, “to read completely”).

The manga sense arose from the way that yomikiri comics are standalone story lines that can be read completely in just one volume.
