Etymology

Indeterminate. Middle Chinese did have the term 絕對 (dzjwet twojH)), using the older forms of these same characters, but this apparently meant “to lose one's spouse, to be widowed”. Use of this term to mean “absolute” may only date back two centuries, though whether it was recoined in China, Japan, or elsewhere remains unclear.
