From Old Japanese. Derivation unknown. Found in the Wamyō Ruijushō kanji dictionary of 938.[1][2]
The spelling appears to be an example of jukujikun, using the Chinese characters 目 (“eye”) + 翳 (“shade; screen; cataract”).
