Etymology

Formerly ゆらく (yuraku), with the final -ku softening to -gu. Derived from adverb ゆら (yura, evoking the sound of a ball or bell rocking), itself derived from or cognate with the imperfective form of Old Japanese verb ゆる (yuru) (揺る / 淘る / 汰る, "to rock, to shake").
