From Khmer ខ្ទើយ (khtəəy, “hermaphrodite; to be hermaphrodite”). Cognate with ກະເທີຍ (ka thœ̄i).

กะเทย • (gà-təəi)

1. (sometimes derogatory or offensive) effeminate male, whether being homosexual or not.
2. (sometimes derogatory or offensive) male-to-female transgender.
3. (obsolete and derogatory) male homosexual.
