From Sanskrit সৰ্ষপ (sarṣapa, mustard seed). Cognate with Sylheti ꠢꠂꠞꠧ (hoiró), Bengali সরিষা (sôriṣa), Oriya ସୋରିଷ (soriṣô), Hindustani سرسوں / सरसों (sarsõ).
