From Sanskrit ৱেসৱাৰ (vesavāra, a particular condiment). Cognate with Oriya ବେଶର (beśôrô, rye paste for curry), Sambalpuri ବେସାର (besarô), Hindustani بسوار / बिस्वार (bisvār, mixture of spices and aromatic seeds powdered and ready for use as curry powder), Nepali बेसार (besāra, turmeric).
