կենալ

Armenian

Etymology

Dialectal reflex of Old Armenian կայանալ (kayanal), infinitive of կայանամ (kayanam). Part of the conjugation is derived from Old Armenian կալ (kal), infinitive of կամ (kam).

Pronunciation

Verb

կենալ (kenal)

  1. (archaic) to stand, be standing
  2. (archaic) to stop, come to stop; to pause
  3. (archaic) to remain in some place or in some condition
  4. (archaic) to wait
  5. (archaic) to live, reside

Usage notes

Nowadays this verb is not used independently, but forms the part of compound verb վեր կենալ (ver kenal, to get up) and few others, such as անց կենալ (ancʿ kenal, to pass). Again, except վեր կենալ (ver kenal) the other compounds are rarely used.
