Etymology

From пять (pjatʹ, five) + -ница (-nica), since Friday is the fifth day of the week (counting from Monday). Compare Ukrainian пя́тниця (pjátnycja), Old East Slavic пятъкъ, Old Church Slavonic пѧтъкъ (pętŭkŭ), Bulgarian пе́тък (pétǎk) and пе́тка (pétka), and Serbo-Croatian пе́так.
