From the stem μαθ- of μαθαίνω (mathaíno, learn) + suffix -εύομαι (compare λαθεύω (lathévo, make mistake).[1][2]

  2. (impersonal: 3rd person singular, especially in simple past tense) become known, publicised, it is rumoured
