Icelandic

Etymology

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈtʰiːna/
    • Rhymes: -iːna

Verb

týna (weak verb, third-person singular past indicative týndi, supine týnt)

  1. to lose (objects)

Usage notes

  • The imperative mood of the verb týna (týndu) is most often used with a negative (the word ekki).
  • It's not possible to "lose" insubstantial things like von ("hope") gleði ("joy"). For that the word missa would rather be used. (the exception to this is the phrase týna lífi meaning literally "to lose [one's] life" that is "to die").
