1. people (in general)

người ta

1. (colloquial) others (i.e. beside you and me); other people

   Con gái người ta vừa giỏi vừa đẹp, chẳng bù cho con nhà mình.

   Other people's daughters are not only pretty, but also talented; mine is not. (mother to daughter)

   Chồng người ta nhưng là người yêu của em.

   Husband of other (woman), boyfriend of mine.

2. Refers to another person/other people, whom the speaker does not wish to name explicitly.

   Anh đem đồ đạc này mau đưa cho người ta mang về đi.

   Quickly bring the stuff back to him.

   Người ta có coi mình ra cái gì đâu!

   They don't respect us at all!

3. Refers to oneself in a conversation, often conveying a sense of intimacy, wittiness and/or dissatisfaction.

   Sao cứ chọc người ta hoài?

   Why do you guys keep teasing me? (female to a group of friends)

   Người ta nói anh ngốc.

   I told you you are silly. (girlfriend to boyfriend)

   Đi đâu để người ta chờ mãi.

   Where did you go? I've been waiting here forever.
