Cognate with Latvian laĩks, Old Church Slavonic отълѣкъ (otŭlěkŭ, “remainder”). The Latvian metatony (laĩks < *làiks) suggests an original oxytone neuter. On the basis of Ancient Greek λοιπόν (loipón, “remainder”) we can theoretically posit a Proto-Indo-European *loikʷóm (“remainder”).[1] In any case, related to laikýti (“hold, keep”) and lìkti (“remain”); see these entries for more.
