Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Permic *kawte. Related to Proto-Samic *kuovtë (Northern Sami guovda). The word may have originally referred to a section of a riverbed, in which case it could be a Pre-Germanic borrowing, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewd-[1].
