Etymology

From Proto-Turkic *köri-, *göŕ- (to see, look).[1] Azerbaijani göz (eye) is equally derived from the Proto-Turkic root *gör- (to see, look) according to the regular sound change of /ŕ/ to /z/ in Common Turkic, whereas this shift did not occur in Azerbaijani görmək and its cognate verbs in other Turkic languages, such as Old Turkic 𐰚𐰇𐰼 (kör-, to see), Turkish görmek (to see), Kazakh көру (körw, to see), Uzbek koʻrmoq (to see), etc.
