From West Germanic *iwwiz, Proto-Germanic *izwiz (dative/accusative case of *jūz), from Proto-Indo-European *wes (compare also *yū́, whence *jūz). Cognate with Old Frisian ju (West Frisian jo), Old Saxon iu, ju (Low German jo, ju), Dutch u, Old High German iu (German euch), Old Norse yðr (Icelandic yður, Swedish er), Gothic 𐌹𐌶𐍅𐌹𐍃 (izwis).
