drabina

Polish

Etymology

From Old Polish drab, cognate to Belarusian драбіны (drabiny) and Ukrainian драби́на (drabýna) (not Serbo-Croatian drȇbīna which is from German Drehbühne). This is possibly from a Proto-Slavic *drabь or *drabъ but possibly also a borrowing. Compare German Treppe (stairs) from Middle High German treppe, trappe, German Trappe (trap) – connected as something trodden into –, English trap from Old English træppe, Dutch trap (stairs), Middle Low German / Middle Dutch / Dutch / German trappen, German trappeln, German trapsen, Dutch trippelen, Luxembourgish trëppelen, Middle High German and German trippeln (to walk intensively), nasalized German, Middle Low German and Dutch trampen, trampeln > English tramp, trample, Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐍄𐍂𐌹𐌼𐍀𐌰𐌽 (anatrimpan, to crowd upon). These words are at some point all of imitative origin, and perhaps Proto-Germanic *titrōną (to titter), Proto-Germanic *trudaną, *tredaną (to tread), Ancient Greek δρασμός (drasmós, flight), διδράσκω (didráskō, to flee) are of the same root. Else in Balto-Slavic it has been connected to Lithuanian dìrbti (to work) (so Brückner) which equals Proto-Germanic *derbaną (to work), to Lithuanian drebė́ti (to quiver), Russian дря́бы (drjáby, carriage for sheaves), Belarusian дра́бы (dráby, rips), Czech droby (giblets).
