Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *čьstь (“honour”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷit-tis. Cognate with Sanskrit चित्ति (citti, “thinking, understanding”) and Avestan 𐬗𐬌𐬯𐬙𐬌-‎ (cisti-, “consciousness”). Compare Czech čest, Ukrainian and Russian честь (čestʹ), Serbo-Croatian and Slovene čast, Belarusian чэсць (čescʹ), Slovak česť, Bulgarian чест (čest).
