Probably a short form of Proto-Indo-European *bʰrā́ter (“brother”). Compare Illyrian *bra, Old Church Slavonic bratъ (bratŭ), Old Prussian brāti, Old Norse bróðir, Old Irish bráthair, Sanskrit भ्रातृ (bhrā́tṛ) and Kurdish bra, all meaning “brother”.
