Etymology

From suppletion of Latin vādere (forms beginning with 'v') and either Vulgar Latin *and(i)tāre, from *ambitāre, frequentative of Latin ambīre or aditāre, frequentative of adīre, or alternatively possibly from *amnāre, from dissimilation of earlier *amlāre, a proto-Romance or Vulgar Latin variant of ambulāre, or from Vulgar Latin adnāre (in view of Occitan anar, never *andar).
