Etymology

First attested in the Yongbi eocheonga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 옳다 (wolhta). Compared with Mongolian ортой (ortoj), ᠣᠷᠤᠲᠠᠢ (orutai, “right, true”), Manchu ᡠᡵᡠ (uru, “truth, true”), Nivkh урдь (urd̦, “to be good”), Tamil உள் (uḷ, “to be, to have”) > உள்ள (uḷḷa, “real, true”) by Gang (2010). The h in the stem may be from 하— (ha-, “to do”), akin to 많— (man-, “many”).
