York City is een Engelse voetbalclub uit York en werd in 1922 gesticht. In 1929 werd de club toegelaten tot de Football League.

De club bracht de meeste jaren van zijn bestaan door in de lagere klassen met een uitzondering van twee seizoenen in de 2de klasse. Enkele keren kon de club het wat verder schoppen in bekervoetbal. Ze behaalden de halve finale van de FA Cup in 1955. Eén van de hoogtepunten uit de clubhistorie is ongetwijfeld de League Cup in 1995-96 toen ze in de tweede ronde Manchester United met 3-0 uitschakelden; datezelfde United won dat jaar zowel de FA Cup als het landskampioenschap. Andere clubs die in de loop der jaren tegen York het onderspit hebben moeten delven zijn onder meer Arsenal, Everton, West Bromwich Albion en Middlesbrough.

In 2001 had de club te kampen met financiële problemen. Deze werden weliswaar opgelost, maar waren er mede de oorzaak van dat York City in 2004 na 75 jaar uit de League degradeerde.

In het seizoen 2011/2012 wist York via de play-offs te promoveren naar de Football League Two. In het seizoen 2015/16 kwam de club uit in de Football League Two en eindigde het op de 24ste en laatste plaats, waardoor degradatie naar de National League andermaal een feit was. Het volgende seizoen degradeerde de ploeg weer, naar de National League North.
