De Primeira Divisão 1996–1997 was de 63ste editie van de strijd in de hoogste afdeling van het Portugese betaald voetbal. Het seizoen ging van start op 25 augustus 1996 en eindigde op 15 juni 1997.
Nieuwkomers waren Rio Ave, Vitória Setúbal en SC Espinho. De drie clubs waren in het voorafgaande seizoen (1995/96) vanuit de Segunda Divisão de Honra naar de hoogste divisie gepromoveerd. FC Porto won de 16de landstitel uit de clubgeschiedenis. Topscorer was Mário Jardel van FC Porto met dertig goals.
