Flash Gordon was Queens eerste soundtrack elpee en het was ook de eerste zogenaamde "rockscore", een film (Flash Gordon) gevuld met een volledige/bijna volledige Rocksoundtrack. Flash Gordon werd geproduceerd door Brian May en Mack en uitgebracht op 27 januari 1981.

Queen werd in 1978 gevraagd om de filmmuziek te doen voor de door Dino De Laurentiis gemaakte sciencefictionfilm op basis van de stripreeks Flash Gordon. Tijdens de opnames voor hun achtste studio-album "The Game", hebben ze de soundtrack opgenomen. De soundtrack is vooral een collage van synthesizergeluiden en bombastische en heftige rock.
