Het Afrikaans kampioenschap voetbal onder 17 van 1997 was de 7e editie van het Afrikaans kampioenschap voetbal onder 17, een CAF-toernooi voor nationale ploegen van spelers onder de 17 jaar. Er namen acht landen deel aan dit toernooi dat van 11 mei tot en met 24 mei in Botswana werd gespeeld. Egypte werd winnaar van het toernooi. In de finale werd Mali met 1–0 verslagen. Ghana werd derde.

Dit toernooi dient tevens als kwalificatietoernooi voor het wereldkampioenschap voetbal onder 17 van 1997, dat van 4 september tot en met 21 september in Egypte werd gespeeld. De twee beste landen van dit toernooi plaatsen zich, naast Egypte als gastland, dat zijn Mali en Ghana.
