Motivated through his parents’ life experiences, he wanted to start a business that would help people less fortunate than himself. [2] This led him to create an initiative called Plate 4 Plate, that would make an impact on world hunger. For every burrito or bowl purchased at Zambrero, a meal is donated to someone in need. As of October 2019, Zambrero has donated over 34 million meals and counting, [3] and aims to donate one billion meals by 2025. [4]

Zambrero is Australia’s largest Mexican food franchise with over 200 restaurants globally. [5]

Locations

Zambrero opened its first restaurant in Lonsdale Street, Braddon in 2005,[6] opening its 100th restaurant a decade later in Midland, Western Australia.[7] Zambrero was recognised as one of Australia’s fastest growing franchises on the BRW Fastest Franchises List for 2011, 2012 and 2013 and Fast 100 List for 2014 and 2015.[8][9][10][11] As of October 2019, Zambrero has 200 restaurants worldwide. [12] Zambrero opened its first restaurant in New Zealand in November 2014, in Dublin, Ireland in March 2016[13] and opened its first two restaurants in United States of America on 20 March 2018. [14] Zambrero will be opening its first restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina in January 2020. [15]

Plate 4 Plate

For every burrito or bowl purchased at a Zambrero restaurant, a meal is donated to someone in need. The meal is made from rice, lentils and soy and invigorated with 23 essential vitamins and nutrients. Communities receive these packs and then use what local ingredients are available to make meals, primarily via school feeding programs. [16] Zambrero have partnered with international hunger relief agency Rise Against Hunger, which delivers nutritious meals to those in need throughout 74 countries across Africa, Asia, Australia and the Americas. In Australia, Zambrero partner with Foodbank to provide a meal to an Australian in need every time someone purchases a product from their retail range. [17]

Accolades

Zambrero won the “Australian Business Awards Enterprise of the Year” award in 2015 [18] and in 2016 the QSR Media “Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative” and “Best Sustainability Initiative” awards. [19] Bianca Azzopardi, CEO of Zambrero was awarded the “Rising Star” award at the 2018 QSR Media awards. [20]
