Wuhan Greenland Center

Wuhan Greenland Center[3] is an unfinished skyscraper in Wuhan, China. Construction has stalled since August 2017 at the 96th floor. Due to airspace regulations, it will be redesigned so its height does not exceed 500 meters above sea level.[4] Another Chinese building, Ping An Finance Center, was also scaled down for similar reasons.

In June 2011, Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architects in conjunction with Thornton Tomasetti Engineers won the design competition[5] to build an energy-efficient[5] tower for Greenland Group, a real estate developer owned by the Shanghai city government.

Original Design

The original design of the building was to have it rise 2,087 feet (636 m)[6] surpassing the Shanghai Tower by only 14 feet and the Tokyo Skytree by 7 feet, making it the second tallest man-made structure in the world. It was first proposed in 2010 and construction commenced in 2012. When the Wuhan Greenland Center reached its 96th floor, construction was halted due to airspace restrictions which led to its subsequent redesign of a 1,562 ft (476 m)[7] building instead of a 2,087 ft (636 m) building. If completed, the redesign of the Wuhan Greenland Center will be the 15th tallest building in the world.

  • July 1, 2011: Overall construction started.
  • June 28, 2012: Started building underground reinforcement structure.[9]
  • September 12, 2012: Started digging the base.[10]
  • June 26, 2013: Base completed.[11]
  • January 4, 2014: First steel beams installed.[12]
  • July 28, 2014: Basement finished, above-ground construction started.[13]
  • December 30, 2015: The building reached 200 meters above ground.[14]
  • April 2016: The building reached 245 meters above ground and cladding has become visible.
  • June 2016: The building reached 300 meters above ground.[15]
