- January 3 – The 103rd United States Congress begins.
- January 3 – President Bush signs the START II Treaty.[1]
- January 13 – President Bush presents former President Ronald Reagan with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.[2]
- January 20 – President Bush finishes his time in office and departs the White House with his wife, Barbara Bush. His successor, Bill Clinton, was inaugurated as the 42nd President of the United States, at noon EST. George H. W. Bush began his post-presidency.[3]
