Saliha Sultan (daughter of Ahmed III)

Saliha Sultan (Ottoman Turkish: صالحہ سلطان; 21 March 1715 – 11 October 1778) was an Ottoman princess, the daughter of Sultan Ahmed III, and his consort Hace Hanım Kadın. She was the half-sister of Sultans Mustafa III and Abdul Hamid I.

Life

Birth

Saliha Sultan was born on 21 March 1715 in the Edirne Palace.[1][2] Her father was Sultan Ahmed III, and her mother was Hace Hanım Kadın.[3] She had a twin brother named Şehzade Selim.[2]

Marriages

On 25 May 1728, at the age of thirteen, her father betrothed her Sari Mustafa Pasha,[4] son of Gazi Deli Husein Pasha.[5] The marriage took place three days later on 28 May. Her dowry was 10,000 ducats. On the same day she and her trousseau were taken to her palace located in Eyüp.[1] The two together had one son named Ahmed Bey, and two daughters named Fatma Hanımsultan, and Hatice Hanımsultan.[6] She was widowed at his death in 1731.[5][1]

On 30 June 1740,[3] during the reign of her cousin Sultan Mahmud I, she married Sarhoş Ali Pasha,[4] son of Abdi Pasha. She was widowed at his death in 1744.[5][7] After Ali Pasha's death, she married Hatibzade Yahya Pasha.[8] She was widowed at his death in 1755.[9]

Three years later, on 6 April 1758,[10] during the reign of her brother Sultan Mustafa III, she married Grand Vizier Koca Ragıp Pasha,[4] when she was forty three, and Ragıp Pasha was sixty one years old. She was widowed at his death in 1763. On 9 May 1764,[11] she married Vezir Turşu Mehmed Pasha,[4] who had formerly served as the agha of the janissaries, and kapudan pasha. She was widowed at his death in 1770.[5][7]

Death

Saliha Sultan died on 11 October 1778 in Bahariye Palace in Eyüp, and was buried in Eyüp cemetery, Istanbul.[12][13] After the death of Saliha Sultan, her goods were captured by the treasury. The remaining goods were sold and given to their debts. The plots and houses from Köprülü were taken from her burial with her death and were given to Esma Sultan. [14]

Saliha Sultan had five children:

  • Sultanzade Ahmed Bey (died 17 January 1733[14]/1736);[15]
  • Fatma Hanımsultan,[6] married in 1748 to Ibrahim Bey, brother of Hatibzade Yahya Pasha;[7]
  • Hatice Hanımsultan,[15] married Mehmed Bey son of Fatma Hanımsultan;[14]
  • Ayşe Hanımsultan[15][6] (died 1753-54, buried in Eyüp cemetery);[14]
  • Emine Hanımsultan[15][6] (died 12 May 1823, buried in Eyüp cemetery),[14] married to Zuhdi Ismail Pasha;
