Kim officially debuted with the studio album, Love Love Love (2013), which included the hit single "Bom Bom Bom."[3] The album garnered Kim awards for best new artist at the 15th Mnet Asian Music Awards and the 2014 Golden Disc Awards.[4][5] Kim followed up his first album with the studio albums, Home (2014) and The Great Dipper (2015), and the extended play, Blooming Season (2017).[6][7][8] He has also contributed to soundtracks for television series including Reply 1994, Pinocchio, Another Miss Oh, and Guardian: The Lonely and Great God.[9][10] As of June 2020, Kim has sold over 12 million digital downloads in his native country (see Roy Kim discography).

In April 2019, Kim was booked as one of the suspects in the Jung Joon-young KakaoTalk chatrooms portion of the Burning Sun scandal by the SMPA (Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency) and currently is under investigation. He admitted to spreading one hidden camera photo taken without consent which he had downloaded from the internet.[11][12][13] Recently, an entertainment reporter said in the show "Rumour Has It" that Kim was actually in a groupchat with Jung Joon-young and Choi Jong-hoon that was about fishing. [14] Both Stone Music Entertainment and Roy Kim has confirmed the news and stated that there was an incident of a pornographic picture of a celebrity that was being shared in the chatroom. Kim took a screenshot of the photoshopped image and posted it saying, "This is not actually that person," and that was what he was questioned for. [15] The February 24th 2020, broadcast of Channel A's 'Rumour Has It' addressed Roy Kim's situation. Celebrity journalist Kim Ji Hyun stated: "Many people don't know that Roy Kim, Jung Joon Young, and Choi Jong Hoon were part of a fishing group chat. Fishing as in catching actual fish. In that room, there was a dissemination of pornographic images of an entertainer at the time. That's why Roy Kim captured a picture from a blog to clarify and say 'that's not that person in the picture' and this fact became twisted to him saying that he was releasing pornographic images. He didn't upload the image to release pornographic images but to say that the picture was edited." The reporter continued stating: "He didn't receive any sentence but just the fact that he was investigated is continually degrading his image. So he can't promote as of now and I wanted people to know this unknown story." [16]

Early life and education

Roy Kim was born Kim Sang-woo in Seoul, South Korea, on July 3, 1993.[1] His father is a former executive of Seoul Takju, a prominent makgeolli liquor manufacturer.[17][18] His mother is an artist.[19] Jung Yoon-hye, formerly of the girl group Rainbow, is Kim's cousin.[20]

During his elementary school years, Kim studied in Canada and then in Asheville, North Carolina in the United States, where he graduated from the Asheville School in 2012.[21][19]

Kim was accepted to attend Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. in 2012, but he delayed his enrollment to audition for Superstar K 4. He entered his freshman year at Georgetown in 2013 and alternated between attending school in the United States and pursuing his music career in South Korea.[22][23] He was majoring in sociology, which he said is "helpful for writing lyrics."[18] In May 2019, Kim denied preparing for Georgetown graduation ceremony, and returned to Korea to face the Burning Sun scandal's investigators after finishing his final exam.[24] Despite the investigation, the university granted an undergraduate degree to Kim.[25]

Career

In 2012, Kim auditioned for Mnet's television talent show Superstar K 4 (the South Korean equivalent of American Idol).[22] He was ultimately the season's winner, out of nearly two million applicants. Following his win, he performed at the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards in Hong Kong.[21]

In June 2013, Kim released his first album, Love Love Love, which included the "mega-hit" single "Bom Bom Bom."[3] The single topped the Gaon Digital Chart for two weeks and Billboard's K-pop Hot 100 for three weeks after its release.[26][6] The album's title track, "Love Love Love" reached #2 on the Gaon chart and #4 on the Billboard chart.[27][28] Following the release of his first album, Kim won several awards, including Best New Male Artist at the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards, 20's Booming Star at the 2013 Mnet 20's Choice Awards, and Rookie of the Year and the Popularity Award at the 2014 Golden Disc Awards.[4][29][5]

Kim released his second album, Home, in October 2014.[6] The album's lead single, also named "Home," was a success, topping South Korea's real-time music charts upon its release and reaching #2 on the Gaon Digital Chart.[30][31] That month, Kim embarked on a South Korean tour to promote the album.[32] In November, he contributed to the soundtrack for the television series Pinocchio, with the song, "Pinocchio,"[33] for which he won Best Original Soundtrack at the 2015 APAN Star Awards[34] and Favorite Foreign Artist at the 2015 Hito Music Awards in Taiwan.[35] Kim also became the first foreign artist to perform at the Hito Music Awards since they were established in 2003.[36]

In December 2015, Kim released his third album, The Great Dipper. The album's title track was a ballad, which was a departure from Kim's previous acoustic folk singles.[7] At the end of the year, Kim performed at three solo concerts in Seoul, all of which had sold out before the release of his album.[37]

Kim released his first extended play, Blooming Season (Korean: 개화기), in May 2017.[8] In February 2018, he released the single "Only Then," which topped Korean music charts upon its release,[38] and which received a Platinum certification for digital sales by Gaon in November.[39] For the song, Kim won Best Ballad at the 2018 Melon Music Awards, Best Male Artist at the 2018 Mnet Asian Music Awards, and a Digital Bonsang at the 2019 Golden Disc Awards.[40][41][42]

On May 27, 2020, Kim released his self-produced single "Linger On", which is his first single in 1 year and 8 months, and will be his last single before enlisting into the Republic of Korea Marine Corps for his mandatory military enlistment on June 15.[43][44]

Controversy

On April 2, 2019, the South Korean police issued a summon for Kim in regards to his alleged involvement in the Burning Sun scandal and the distribution of non-consensual sex videos. He was accused of sharing obscene materials on a mobile chat with several other fellow entertainers, including Choi Jong-hoon and singer Jung Joon-young.[45][46][47] As of April 4, Kim was booked as a suspect by the SMPA (Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency) and is under investigation. On April 11, he admitted to spreading hidden camera photos taken without consent which he had downloaded from the internet.[48][11][12][13] Students in Georgetown University petitioned the school to take a tough stand against Kim's behavior and suspend him.[49] In May 2019, Kim denied preparing for Georgetown graduation, and returned to Korea to face the investigators after finishing his final exam. The school stated that it would conduct its own investigation into the sexual misconduct allegations against Kim.[24][50] Later on, the school granted an undergraduate degree to Kim despite the scandal.[25]
