North Washington, Maine

North Washington is an unorganized territory in Washington County, Maine, United States. The population was 499 at the 2010 census.[1]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the unorganized territory has a total area of 979.6 square miles (2,537.2 km²), of which 886.1 square miles (2,295.0 km²) is land and 93.5 square miles (242.2 km²), or 9.55%, is water.

The territory consists of 28 townships plus the former town of Centerville.

At the 2000 census there were 547 people in 232 households, including 157 families, in the unorganized territory. The population density was 0.6 people per square mile (0.2/km²). There were 1,044 housing units at an average density of 1.2/sq mi (0.5/km²). The racial makeup of the unorganized territory was 95.25% White, 0.18% Black or African American, 3.47% Native American, 0.55% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.73%.[4]

Of the 232 households 26.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% were married couples living together, 5.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 28.0% of households were one person and 10.3% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.85.

The age distribution was 22.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% 65 or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 105.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 105.3 males.

The median household income was $29,135 and the median family income was $30,375. Males had a median income of $38,375 versus $16,705 for females. The per capita income for the unorganized territory was $15,687. About 18.9% of families and 21.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.3% of those under age 18 and 21.6% of those age 65 or over.
