No Frauds

"No Frauds" is a song by American rapper Nicki Minaj, with Canadian rapper Drake and American rapper Lil Wayne. The song is a response to hip-hop artist Remy Ma's "Shether", a 7-minute diss track aimed at Nicki Minaj. Produced by Murda Beatz and Cubeatz, the song was released as a single on March 10, 2017 by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records and Republic Records, along with "Changed It" and "Regret in Your Tears".[1][2] "No Frauds" sold 78,861 copies during the first week of its release; it debuted and peaked at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[3] On April 19, Nicki Minaj released the music video for "No Frauds".

Background and release

In 2007 Nicki Minaj debuted a freestyle song titled "Dirty Money" on her "Playtime is Over" in which she raps, "Tell that bitch with the crown to run it like Chris Brown" on top of the beat from Terror Squad's "Yeah Yeah Yeah" song from their "True Story Time Album", igniting a feud between her and Remy Ma.[4]

Remy Ma, a hip-hop artist and member of Terror Squad, believed the verse was a jab at her and showed up to confront Nicki Minaj about it during a release party. Nicki Minaj never confirmed the rumors on whether she was speaking about Remy Ma in the lyrics. The public feud between Remy Ma and Nicki Minaj ended in 2008 when Remy Ma was sentenced to jail on multiple charges.[5]

Remy Ma served 6 years in jail during which Nicki Minaj rose to fame winning BET awards Best Female Hip-Hop Artist Award in 2016 two years after Remy Ma's release from jail.[6] After her release from jail in 2014 Remy Ma released a freestyle song in 2015 on top of the beat of Nicki Minaj's song "Truffle Butter" reigniting the feud.[7]

In late November 2016 Remy Ma was featured on "Wait a Minute (Remix)" from hip-hop artist Phresher in which she raps, "Same bitches call me, that's how I knew y'all was phony I put putting that work, taking 'em to church, cause I leave 'em holy Will I smoke this bitch? Yes Probably fail my piss test Get rid of those fake breasts And put a vest on this bitch chest," which was wildly speculated by fans as Remy Ma taking shots at Nicki Minaj.[8] Four months later on February 22, 2017 Nicki Minaj appeared as a featured artist on hip-hop artist Gucci Mane's single "Make Love" in which she raps what many speculate as a response to Remy Ma, "Bitch I'm the greatest, no Kendrick and no Sia, I'm the iPhone you the Nokia, Everybody know you jealous, bitch, it's so clear, Tell them bum ass bitches to play their role".[9]

Three days later on February 25, 2017 Remy Ma responded by releasing "Shether", a 7-minute diss track aimed towards Minaj. The song contained multiple personal attacks towards Minaj with some lines talking about her brother who was accused of sexually assaulting a child.[10] On one line Remy Ma raps, "I'm jealous? Bitch, you was happy when they took me, best thing that ever happened to you was when they booked me." suggesting that Nicki Minaj celebrated when her prominent rival was incarcerated.[11] On March 10, 2017, Nicki Minaj released three singles: "Regret in Your Tears", "Changed It" with Lil Wayne, and "No Frauds" with Drake and Lil Wayne, that was intended on her fourth studio album but were ultimately kept as singles.[12][13] In the song, Minaj responds to Remy Ma's diss tracks "Shether" and "Another One".[14][15] On the diss song "No Frauds" Nicki Minaj calls out Remy Ma's lack of record sales rapping, "You can't be Pablo if your work ain't selling".[16] She also takes jabs at Remy Ma for going to jail and leaving her son saying, "What type of mother leave her one son over a stack?".[17] The diss song continues with more personal attacks and statements in which Nicki Minaj asserts herself as the Queen of Rap.

After its release "No Frauds" entered at number 34 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay with only three days of radio play.[18] "No Frauds" debuted at number 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100, but quickly fell 70 spots to #84 in its second week.[19]

Background

On March 16, 2017, the official audio of the song was uploaded to Nicki Minaj's Vevo account.[20] The official music video was released on April 19, 2017. "No Frauds" was shot by director Benny Boom.[21]

Reception

The music video received some backlash and criticism from fans and the media in the United Kingdom for featuring footage of Minaj on the Westminster Bridge, which was the site of a recent terror attack. Previously, it was noted that clips of the bridge in the video would be cut. "When everybody involved in the project heard the news they were devastated and thought it would be in bad taste to feature it. The other London scenes will remain, but it's highly doubtful the bridge footage will make the cut.", said an unnamed source from Minaj's camp via The Sun. Despite the statement, the scenes still ended up in the final cut of the video.[22][23] As of March 2020, the video has over 180 million views.

Live performances

Nicki Minaj performed "No Frauds" during the 2017 Billboard Music Awards.[24] She also performed the song during the 2017 NBA Awards.[25]
