Nishikant Dubey

Nishikant Dubey (b 1969) is a member of India's 17th Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament.[2] He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and represents the Godda constituency in Jharkhand since May 2019.[1] Additionally he was a member of the 15th and 16th Lok Sabha, 2009-2014 and 2014-2019 respectively.[1]

Education & background

Nishikant Dubey has been active in politics since 2009, prior to that he was an employee of Essar in the capacity of Director. He married Anukant Dubey in the year 2000. He holds a BA degree from Marwari College Bhagalpur, MBA and a Doctorate from Pratap University in Jaipur.[1]

Controversies

  • In December 2019, while discussing on the Taxation Law Amendment Bill and a statutory resolution disapproving the ordinance on the same legislation in the lower house of the Parliament of India, Dubey said: "Sustainable economic development is more important than GDP".[3] Even after following a backlash on the social media he was found justifying his statement on his Facebook page.[4]
  • In September 2018, Dubey allowed a party worker to wash his feet and drink up the water.[5] Dubey initially boosted this incident on his Facebook page;[6] however, following the backlash on social media and from opposition parties he changed his stand and said that he tried to stop the party worker in doing so but the guy wouldn't listen and threatened to suicide.[7]
  • In April 2014, Prior to 2014 Indian general election, Dubey and his wife Anamika Gautam were booked for allegedly demanding Rs 2 crore from a man for election campaign.[10]
